Don Freedman gave a public talk on "Legal and Financial Issues in Alzheimer's Disease" on May 12, 2005, at the offices of the Massachusetts Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, in Watertown, Massachusetts. Topics included assessing capacity; use and misuse of durable powers of attorney; health care proxies as an alternative to guardianship; the importance of medical directives (living wills) particularly in light of recent legal cases; limitations in Medicare; issues in prescription medication coverage under Medicare; and accessing MassHealth (Medicaid) in both home- and community-based programs and in nursing homes.
