On September 28, 2007, firm attorney Donald Freedman, together with his wife, Ruth Freedman, Ph.D., of the Boston University School of Social Work, gave a talk by national telephone conference on "Assessing and Enhancing the Capacity of Individuals with Dual Diagnoses to Make Informed Health and Mental Health Care Decisions." The purpose of the presentation was to provide a legal and ethical framework for understanding issues of competency, capacity and consent in health care decision-making; guidelines for assessing decisional capacity of individuals with dual diagnoses (mental retardation and mental illness); and strategies to enhance the decision-making capacity of these individuals.
