On December 2, 2004, Don Freedman co-chaired (with Emily Starr), their 20th (or so) annual conference on advanced topics in elder and disability law, for Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, Inc. This year, the focus was on home- and community-based care. Sixteen experts spoke on accessing resources in this vital and complex area. Attorney Deborah H. Thomson, of the PASS Group, Inc., in her keynote underscored the importance of legislative advocacy in protecting the rights of elders and individuals with disabilities. Other topics included updates on recent developments, the appropriate use of pooled trusts, Veteran's benefits, income, gift and estate tax issues, case management, and accessing government assistance for home- and community-based alternatives to nursing home placement for elders and for non-elder adults with severe physical or mental impairments. Attorney David H. Jones of the firm also presented, on estate recovery and pooled trusts.
